Asturias and nature are almost synonymous. In our particular Natural Paradise we are very fortunate in that regard, so much so that around one third of the region’s surface has some kind of protection. In the case of Natural Parks, there are 5 that we find in the Principality: Natural Park of Fuentes del Narcea, Dega\u00f1a e Ibias, P.N. from Somiedo, P.N. from Las Ubi\u00f1as-La Mesa, P.N. of Ponga and P.N. of Networks.<\/p>\n
Today we want to get a little closer to this last one: the Natural Park of Redes.<\/p>\n
Located in the councils of Caso and Sobrescobio and bathed by the Nal\u00f3n River, it is just an hour from our aparthotel. Its wealth has also allowed it to be declared a Biosphere Reserve in 2001 and be included in the Natura 2000 Network, considered as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) as a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) and Special Zone Conservation (ZEC).<\/p>\n
As if all this were not enough, within its more than 350 km2 of extension, there are 3 points declared Natural Monuments:<\/p>\n
– The Route of the Dawn, of which we had already spoken to you on another occasion in our blog.<\/p>\n
– Deboyu Cave, which is not a visitable cave in this case (we are talking about those that are here), but it is very important as it is the place where most of the bats of the reserve nest.<\/p>\n
– Cascada del Tabay\u00f3n del Mongayu, which is accessed by the route of the same name, which starts from the town of Tarna. The waterfall is spectacular because of the height of the fall (60 meters).<\/p>\n
Another of the highlights is Lake Ubales, impressive for its size and the views it offers and which can be accessed by the route of the Desfiladero de los Arrudos.<\/p>\n

As you may have already imagined, the network of hiking trails in the Parque de Redeses one of its main attractions. In Campo de Caso, capital of the council, there is the Reception and Interpretation Center, where they can inform you in detail of everything. We recommend that you stop by before starting any activity in the park, as they will also give you the guidelines to follow to be as respectful as possible with the environment.<\/p>\n
In addition to this center, there are other equipment that you may find interesting, such as the House of Water, in Rioseco, the Wood Museum, in Veneros, the Museum of Beekeeping, in Tanes, or the Workshop of the Madre\u00f1a, in Pendones .<\/p>\n
Within the territory of Redes there are also two reservoirs (Rioseco and Tanes), and three recreational areas: El Vall\u00e1u, Coll\u00e1 del Pandu and Los Arrudos.<\/p>\n
WILDLIFE<\/p>\n
Of course, wildlife in Networks has a fundamental role. In its forests, mainly of beech trees, although also of oaks, birches or chestnut trees among others, inhabit species such as the brown bear, the wolf, the chamois, the roe deer and the deer or deer. The latter offers a show during the females’ mating season (late September – early October), known as the bellowing. The sound of the clash of the antlers and the bellows of the male deer in their struggle to impose themselves on their rivals and conquer the females is something difficult to forget.<\/p>\n
Bats are also important, as we mentioned when talking about Deboyu Cave (the cave bat and the Geoffroy bat are species of special interest).<\/p>\n
Of course, birds are also protagonists. As a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA), there is a bird observatory in the town of La Polina, in the Case council. Grouses, eagles, vultures, griffon vultures, owls, ducks and herons, or cormorants are some of the species that can be seen in Networks.<\/p>\n
There are also less known species, such as the Iberian desman, a nice animal that is only established in very pure waters, so it is considered as an indicator of the cleanliness and health of the waters in which it lives. One more sign of the quality of the waters that run through the park.<\/p>\n

GASTRONOMY<\/p>\n
After visiting the Park, it’s time to regain strength. Neither Networks will disappoint you at this point, since the cuisine of the area is spectacular and overwhelming. It is worth noting the Cas\u00edn Cheese, typical of the area and which has Protected Designation of Origin. The casino cow or “Asturian mountain” offers not only the milk with which these cheeses are produced, but a great meat with which to prepare delicious dishes.<\/p>\n
The lamb with the stake is another of the typical dishes of the area, as well as the pitu caleya (poultry chicken), trout or hunting stews (deer, wild boar, roe deer …). Other typical products can be honey or sweets such as the traditional rice with Asturian milk or the \u201csighs of the Nal\u00f3n\u201d, traditional pasta made in Caso.<\/p>\n
And as for the drink, the cider is the queen, although it is necessary to emphasize the elaboration of liquors and of the handmade beer \u201cCaleya\u201d.<\/p>\n
